And though there is talk of an economic recovery in some countries, and in certain sectors of the economy air jordans 13, many photographers and photographic agencies are still struggling to successfully market and licence their work.
The scale of the problem is shocking. “Downloads have declined by 90 per cent in the course of the past year. At the moment is seems that only educational publishers are purchasing photos,” says Hiss about a market in which photo editors from magazines, newspapers and advertising agencies would normally be active.
A Future for Boutique Photo Agencies
Whether customers do that over coming weeks and months remains to be seen jordan 13, but managing directors of photo agencies – such as Brigitte Hiss – are hoping that will prove to be the case.
The photography market has seen some drastic changes in recent years, many of which have been introduced via the internet. Economic Recession Hits Photographic Rates
The rates paid to reproduce photographs tumbled as the recession bit. Advertising rates were slashed. Editors at newspapers and magazines had their budgets cut, meaning that they had less money available to license photos.
Photographers could previously expect to earn a fee every time one of their images was used. The traditional Rights Managed system of usage meant that a fee was negotiated according to how and where the photo was used. But the increase in the supply of images has also seen business models change. Under the Royalty Free system a client pays a single fee and is allowed to re-use the photograph. And subscription systems have become increasingly common.
The global economic crisis, which took hold in mid-2008, is still taking its toll on fees paid for photographs. Even into the second quarter of 2010, many agencies and photographers are still suffering from the effects of a globally depressed market.
Big Changes in the Photography Market
An Interview with Brigitte Hiss
Yet despite increased competition in the market as a whole, Hiss remains confident that boutique agencies have much to offer, “through specialisation on one theme and, consequently jordans january 2011, subject matter expertise. In an ideal case, customers with specific themes should turn to this kind of agency.”
“Since 2008 sales have gone continually backwards,” says Brigitte Hiss, Managing Director at Indo-Pictures and Sinopictures, photo agencies specialising in Indian and Chinese images based in Berlin, Germany. “We even lost some of our regular customers. The economic crisis served as a pretext for expenditure on photos to be drastically cut. Now the crisis is all but over, but expenditure on photos is not rising.”
