The Bad News About Antioxidants
“Use of antioxidants during chemotherapy and radiotherapy should be avoided” (Cancer J Clin 2005;55:319-321).
One of the most vexing characteristics of modern medicine is its inconsistency. Years of dogmatic thinking can be swept away by one well-conducted study. Conversely, extensive research may leave seemingly simple questions unanswered. In spite of two decades of scientifically rigorous investigation, controversy still surrounds the use of antioxidants in conjunction with cancer treatments.
In Cancer Treatment Reviews, investigators evaluated 845 studies from five scientific databases. They concluded:
In the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers reviewed the effects of antioxidants on responses to radiation and chemotherapy.
“The use of supplemental antioxidants during chemotherapy and radiation therapy should be discouraged because of the possibility of tumor protection and reduced survival.” (Journal of the National Cancer Institute 2008;100(11):773-783.
On the other hand, antioxidants have been shown to ameliorate the adverse effects of cancer treatment, allowing patients to finish challenging courses of therapy. If treatment can be completed, survival is improved.
Widely disparate views among experts about the use of antioxidants during cancer therapy are perplexing to patients. Individuals facing their own mortality are justifiably confused when specialists disagree on whether antioxidants should be recommended—or used at all—during the administration of chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
“…supplemental antioxidants do not undermine the effectiveness of cytotoxic therapies…dietary antioxidants do not conflict with the use of radiotherapy in the treatment of a wide variety of cancers.” (Integrative Cancer Therapies 2007;6(3):281-292).

Powerful Antioxidants
The dispute revolves around the notion that antioxidants might thwart the mechanism of action of most anti-cancer therapies. Simply put, chemotherapy and radiation are designed to inflict damage on tumor cells. Theoretically [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], antioxidants help tumor cells repair that damage, thus rendering treatment less effective.
Few physicians would disagree that dietary antioxidants are instrumental in reducing health risks. Indeed, a diet replete with antioxidant-containing foods is a standard recommendation in clinical practice. However [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once a cancer is present and treatment has begun, doctors’ opinions are split.
In the case of radiotherapy, the largest of nine studies showed that antioxidant supplementation was associated with a reduction in survival.Amifostine (an FDA-approved antioxidant) may improve survival, but data are insufficient for solid conclusions.Of 16 trials that examined the impact of antioxidants on chemotherapy, no study reported decreased effectiveness of therapy when antioxidants were supplemented, but the studies were too small to reliably detect such differences. The Good News About Antioxidants
