Roles and Performances
Expectations from the Audience
Lost in Austen is a British miniseries that premiered in Britain in 2008. It stars Jemima Rooper as Amanda Price, a woman enthralled and comforted by Jane Austen’s book, Pride and Prejudice. After a harsh look at her love life, she questions her desires and standards. She enters the bathroom only to see Elizabeth Bennet there. She changes places with Elizabeth Bennet, landing in Longborn at the beginning of the beloved story. Naturally, her presence makes for continual changes to the story, and her attempts to right all the mishaps make the film pass by quickly. Thankfully, she does not try to pass for Elizabeth, but as a friend visiting. The miniseries is done surprisingly well, and does not slaughter the work of Jane Austen.
The film itself is the very definition of whimsical, and laughter is common. One has to accept the fact that she has traveled through time by following Elizabeth Bennet through a door in her shower, and one has to forgive constant faux pas made by the modern day Amanda, who is conflicted about whether her journey is exciting and wonderful, or terrifying and caused by medical reasons. However, the modern responses to insults and societal slights are very empowering, and the kind of thing just once, the way one hopes to see a demure character of Jane Austen react. It is the kind of film for which one wishes, to lose oneself in a new world, familiar and terrifying simultaneously, and laughing along the way. Of course, knowing the story only adds to the enjoyment and frustration of watching this DVD.
This film is not for Jane Austen purists, or for those seeking to see Pride and Prejudice. The BBC and A&E gave the world an accurate, thorough portrayal of the story in 1995 starring the definitive Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, followed by Helen Fielding’s shorter attempt starring Keira Nightley in 2005. This film is for those who love the characters Austen created, who want to see them in a new light and in new situations. The film assumes there is a cursory knowledge of the story, as Amanda has as she navigates through it. While some liberties are taken, of which Ms. Austen would likely not be pleased, the heart and spirit of Austen’s characters are taken into account.
Elliot Cowan plays Mr. Darcy to Amanda’s passive praise of Elizabeth Bennet. While he does portray the character well, he lacks the certain burning handsomeness that one comes to expect from him. Colin Firth has ruined Mr. Darcy for the world in body, and Amanda does make several references to him. Mr. Bennet is played by Hugh Bonneville, and is fairly close to the father in the book, but seems to be more reclusive and slow to action than in the story. Alex Kingston portrays Mrs. Bennet; while still over-attentive to her nerves, she has a strong backbone and does not hesitate to advocate for her daughters in ways that can be surprising to the audience.
The Bennet sisters are all as expected, except for Jane, who, always described as a great beauty, is not as marvelously handsome as one would expect from the story. She does, however, portray the sweetness and devotion to loved ones for which Jane is so noted. Wickham brings some surprises to the role [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], played by Tom Riley, and the ever-loathed Mr. Collins, as portrayed by Guy Henry, almost makes the viewer willing to part with their previous meal. This is an excellent casting decision [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a role well played. Other decisions are also fantastic, such as Lydia, played by Perdita Weeks [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Mr. Bennet, played by Hugh Bonneville. It is a great marvel when Mr. Bennet casuall
