However, in 2005, Welsh-born Russell T Davis decided the show should have another chance and became executive producer. Ironically, Davis was born in 1963 – the year that the original show first began! Casting Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and former singer Billie Piper as his assistant, the show became an instant hit, and essential Saturday night viewing. It introduced Scottish John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who later became the star of a spin-off show to be discussed later.
While Star Trek and Star Gate are well known sci-fi shows in the USA, the UK also has some award-winning science fiction programmes.
Eccleston had only signed up for a year, and was replaced by David Tennant after this. Tennant’s good looks added more viewers to the show, and many fans were upset when he left at the end of 2009. He has since been replaced by Matt Smith, whose first season finishes 26 June 2010.

The Doctor is from planet Gallifrey [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where the inhabitants can live for hundreds of years. When injured to a near-death state, Time Lords can cheat death by ‘regenerating’ – which changes their bodies and personalities, although they keep all previous knowledge. This is used by the writers so that the story can keep going when actor playing the Doctor decides to leave.

Torchwood
Doctor Who was cancelled in the 1980s, as the BBC did not believe it was a worthwhile show. In 1996, a film was made [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], starring Paul McGann as the Doctor, and was released in America as the first taste of Who, but failed to interest both American and British audiences. Some blamed the fact that too much information was thrown at the audience without explanation, and then the plot dragged.
