The best way to apply the zones is to pick a point in the picture that the photographer wants to show most accurately. For example, if the picture is of the snowy landscape [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], apply metering and test the exposure of the snow. Snow would be zone IX in the Zone System. The camera reads the snow as middle gray and would otherwise paint everything around it in regards to differences in light rather than extremely white. In this way, the picture will be properly exposed for the brilliant white snow while still showing the differentiation in the scenery.
With the Zone System that Ansel Adams developed, a photographer can visualize how the picture should be exposed and then choose how to expose it accordingly. For instance, a photographer can visualize certain differences in color and gradation that a camera cannot distinguish. When the camera cannot distinguish these differences, it exposes them all equally, leading to pictures that do not display what the photographer wanted.

The same basic steps can be followed for something that is darker than usual. Simply pick the subject, meter its exposure, and adjust the f-stops downward to the correct zone. Of course, with the different changes in exposure, some details will be lost. However, the picture will more accurately reflect the scene for portrayal rather than over-exposure or under-exposure.

Though Adams developed the Zone System for film and black and white photography, it has been easily transferable to digital photography. Even though the film is not developed in a darkroom, photographers can apply the same principles, using zones to meter the lighting [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to get the proper exposure in order to achieve the wanted effects.
When taking pictures, a camera’s exposure meter reads a scene through various shades of gray and creates a picture based on that. It assumes an average, standard gray value and evaluates all other aspects of the picture based on that particular gray. This technique becomes troublesome when the scene has many different highlights and lowlights, such as a snowy field or a landscape against a bright sky.
The idea of the Zone System is to assign values to portions of the picture that have varying lightness. Adams divides his scale into 11 zones that increase from pure black to pure white. In addition, he grouped together a dynamic range and a texture range in the scale. Each zone is one f-stop from the next zone. With a measurement of exposure values, each change in a zone is one exposure value change. Zones 0 and X (pure black and pure white, respectively) are each 5 f-stops away from middle gray. The middle gray value is a standard gray of about 18%.
