There are various theories why Lee never produced her second novel. At one point her sister claimed the manuscript had been stolen. But perhaps Lee explained it best, “I said what I had to say.”

Shields’ book, Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee, there are three questions most asked of the award winning author, Is she dead? Is she gay? What ever happened to book #2?
Lee attended the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa where she was the editor of the school’s humor magazine Puma Clyde Sneakers, a post she had to give up when she began to study law. Ultimately, though, her love of literature and writing won out and she left Alabama to pursue her dream in New York City.
According to the A&E Television Network site, in 1956, thanks to the generosity of friends Michael Martin Brown and his wife Joy, Lee was financially able to write full time. She finished her novel, first titled Go Set a Watchman, then Atticus and finally To Kill a Mockingbird in 1959.
Harper Lee was born April 28, 1926. She rocketed to fame with the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird, a humorous, sometimes caustic look at life in a small southern town, much like her home town of Monroeville, Alabama, where she retreated after tiring of life in the public eye.
For a while Lee enjoyed her notoriety. She helped promote the film but some feel that it was her overexposure to fame that caused her to pull back from public life.
Mockingbird was published in 1960 and Lee was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1961.
Lee’s Youth
Lee served on the National Council of the Arts in 1966 but soon after she all but disappeared from sight. During this time she is said to have worked on two books, one fiction and one non fiction. She published three short magazine articles, which to this day stand as her only public follow up to To Kill a Mockingbird.
That year she also accompanied her long time friend Cheap Puma Disc, Truman Capote, to Kansas to aid him in gathering information for an article he was researching on the murders of a Kansas farm family, the Clutters. The article eventually grew into a book, In Cold Blood.
To this day, those questions remain unanswered and Lee’s stock reply to requests for interviews is, “Not just no, but hell no.”
Harper Lee’s Private Life
In 1962 To Kill a Mockingbird was made into a movie which garnered eight Academy Award nominations. It ulitmately won four Oscars including that of Best Actor for Gregory Peck's portrayal of Atticus Finch.
The book has become an American classic and remains on the required reading lists of countless schools but what of the author? Who is she and what makes her tick? The answer to that question is not readily available.

Harper Lee and Her Only Published Novel
Nelle Harper Lee was the youngest of four children, the daughter of a lawyer and a mother who was seldom seen out side their home. There is speculation that Mrs. Lee may have been bipolar. Lee grew up a tom boy, much like her main character, Jean Louise Finch. One of her closest childhood friends was a boy named Truman Streckfus Persons, better known as Truman Capote, the inspiration for Dill in the book.
