Boris Leven of West Side Story Designed the Stage for The Band

Band members Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, and Garth Hudson were ready to give it their all. They wanted to document the occasion and called upon Martin Scorsese, who did not want to interfere with the actual performance and remained unobtrusive (unlike his Stones film Shine A Light). This film is more rock concert and less documentary, but it does offer a few good interviews for background, too. If you are looking for history and personal revelations, you may be disappointed. But if you want a 1976 concert with an amazing array of talent, get ready.

Although originally the date was going to be somewhat earlier, the final performance was set for Thanksgiving. There would be dinner and dancing, with the performers starting around 9 PM. The stage was set in high theater mode, with an operatic feel, large chandeliers, and lots of drama. The Canadian rock band had decided to leave it all behind, because as one member said, "It's a goddamn impossible way of life."
The crystal clear voice with incredible power that is Joni Mitchell is captured here when she was still at the top of her game. Bob Dylan came across as the troubadour of the age in his big floppy hat, not as much a hippy as previously, but not yet part of the 80s that were to follow. An incredibly young-looking George Carlin got in a few quips between songs, and appearances by Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Van Morrison and Niel Diamond are highlighted. But the best part of the film is The Band. Fans are sure to love hearing the group is this final moment. Some of the shots from behind the musicians towards the crowd give a different perspective to the concert feel and there is plenty of time to capture all the talent in operation. Ringo Starr, Paul Butterfield, Dr. John, Van Morrison and Emmylou Harrison all participated.
One of the band members is asked what kind of music the band plays, since it has elements of country, soul, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll within it. The Band member answered, "rock

, they had decided to go out, and to go out in style. The talent in this rock concert make it one of the most representative of the era, with such greats as Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, George Carlin, Niel Diamond, and many others. The day was Thanksgiving, 1976.
