To preheat the stove a small amount of fuel is placed in a cup directly under the burner and generator tube. The fuel is ignited and it preheats the generator so when the pressurized fuel contacts the hot tube, it converts into a gas state. Really this is not as complicated as it seems. Where things get odd with gas stoves is when you want to fire them up again, shortly after turning it off.

Before making a decision about a backpacking stove you have to understand the pros and cons of the stoves available.
Using the Backpacking Stove
Backpacking Stove Types
On the other hand, liquid fuels like Coleman Fuel will burn all the way down to -40 degrees F. So for a stove that can be used year around, a liquid fueled stove is the way to go.
And there is the consideration the Coleman Fuel costs considerably less than the equal number of canisters needed to operate a stove.
First you have to look at how long you will be out on the trail. When trips are short, carrying an extra canister or two of fuel is not a huge concern. But as the trip gets longer, the heavier the load of canisters becomes.
Sure there are tricks around this, (see Camping Stoves in Winter) but honestly canister stoves should stay home when it is really cold.

In mild temperatures both types of stoves work well

, but when the cold hits, canister stoves begin having a big problem. To put it simply, butane will not freely vaporize in temperatures below 32 degrees F. So when it is colder than this, only a small amount of vapor pressure is generated in the canister and you end up with a meager small blue flame, if it burns at all. To get around this manufactures blend fuels such as iso-butane and propane together for better cold weather performance. But even this does not help when temperatures drop into the high teens and below.
With the cartridge stove

, you just light it, but if the liquid fueled stove has cooled enough, it has to be primed again just as the first time. So again the choice of stoves really has a lot to do with the way you cook. For those who just want to boil water then some of the liquid fueled stoves are the hottest around, but for those who want to simmer that meal, then a canister stove works the best – until it gets cold.
When it comes to ease of use, the canister stoves win out hands down. All you do is turn a knob

, press the igniter or light a match and you are ready to cook. Not so with most liquid fueled backpacking stoves. Again comparing the MSR to the same canister stove, the few seconds it took to light the first stove is replaced by a few minutes of preheating the MSR.
But when it comes to shorter trips, the decision can now be based more on ease of use and personal preference.
Consider this comparison between the Mountain Safety Research (MSR) Whisperlite International and a canister stove. The MSR will burn for 2 hrs 40 min on 1.25 pints of fuel where as the canister stove would need nearly three of the 8-ounce (220 gr) cartridges to burn the same amount of time. The liquid fuel would weigh about 1.25 pounds as compared to the canisters at 2.5-pounds. So long trips favor liquid fueled stoves over canister stoves.
There are two major types of backpacking stoves on the market. Stoves that use liquid fuel known as Coleman Fuel or white gas and canister fueled stoves that burn blends of pressurized gas such as butane and propane. The choice of which stove will work best for you depends upon the type of backpacking you do and the way you cook.
