One of the major claims that advocates of barefoot running claim is that it will make you a faster, more efficient runner. Is this true? Sort of. Take a runner who has run for several years and is nearly debilitated by the accumulation of wear and tear sustained during all those years. Like many other runners who fit this profile, he still gets out there but his running form resembles a shuffle or power walk rather than a run. He might even have to break up the running with walking intervals in between. If he picked up barefoot running, he could probably teach himself to land a little softer, reducing pain to enable him to run the entire way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thus reducing the time it takes to complete the route.
Let's take a look at a younger, healthier runner now. But for what reasons? The average men's size nine running shoe weighs twelve ounces, so simply taking off his shoes will result in a significant savings in weight and drag. It's simply physics. Given the same same amount of effort, or energy, the body that weighs less will move faster and more efficiently. But how long can this runner tolerate having zero cushion and zero support under his feet? Some runners are gifted with the extraordinary ability to resist pain and injury. Most, like you and I are not that gifted.
So, barefoot running can reduce run times,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it doesn't necessarily make you a more efficient and faster runner. It can teach you to be softer on your landing, which creates the possibility of reducing pain and allowing you to finish your run without stopping. Running without shoes also reduces the overall amount of weight dragging you down.
