$1. 56 Million Awarded to the Estate of Caroline Johnston by Alexandra Reed
Hartford Hospital lost a medical malpractice case Friday January 22, 2010, when a jury awarded $1. 56 million to the estate of an East Hartford woman.
Caroline Johnston, a married mother of two, was diagnosed in October of 2003 with a heart condition and was seeking a transplant. When she went to the emergency room at Hartford Hospital on March 12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2004, it was not because of her heart condition, it was from sharp chest pains, vomiting and diarrhea.
A blood sample was taken and showed that Caroline was dehydrated along with low levels of potassium, an electrolyte that is essential to maintaining heart functions. Fluids were administered,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the potassium deficit was not remedied despite blood work that showed she had a low level in her body. Doctors tried to discharge Caroline but she refused, insisting to see a cardiologist.
At 11 a. m. she was found unresponsive, having suffered from cardiac arrest, dying a few days later after her familys painful decision to take her off a respirator. At the time of her death, her sons were 5 years and 11 months old, respectively. Harry Johnston, Carolines husband,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], filed the lawsuit against the Hartford Hospital in 2006.
After a trial in Superior Court in Hartford, the jury awarded $1. 56 million to Johnstons estate. Hartford Hospital declined to comment.
Such cases are becoming relatively common. Although the blood work had been performed showing low levels of potassium, a potentially fatal condition, the test results were apparently ignored. Minding those results and taking proper steps to remedy her condition, may well have saved Mrs. Johnstons life. In addition, the victim was aware that something was terribly wrong, and her pleadings went unheeded as well.
In the end, Hartford Hospital was found at fault, and a settlement was reached. But was $1. 56 million worth the life of their mother to two children who will never again know their mothers love? The money might help the survivors continue in better financial circumstances, which is beneficial,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but no amount of money will bring their mother back.
A final issue was a consequence of the offending hospitals callous treatment of Mrs. Johnston. The emotional struggle involved with taking their loved one off a respirator will painfully linger.
