Hartford Hospital lost a medical malpractice case Friday January 22, 2010, when a jury awarded $1. 56 million to the estate of an East Hartford woman.
Caroline Johnston, a married mother of two, was diagnosed in October of 2003 with a heart condition and was seeking a transplant. At the time of her death, her sons were 5 years and 11 months old, respectively. In the end, Hartford Hospital was found at fault, and a settlement was reached. But was $1. 56 million worth the life of their mother to two children who will never again know their mothers love? A final issue was a consequence of the offending hospitals callous treatment of Mrs. Johnston. The emotional struggle involved with taking their loved one off a respirator will painfully linger.
