What Is Hearing Disabilities?
It was said by a National Institute of Health panel that the statistics of babies that are not seen to have hearing disabilities are more than half of that are born and it is only noticed when they are about two years at which time it would have become permanent. Now, modern technology has developed a new mechanism that makes it possible to check if new born have deafness just within hours after they are born and the NIH committee is recommending using this. The response of the audience composed of healthcare workers who work closely with children who are hearing impaired was positive. The statistics of deaf babies in the US is about 1 in every 1, 000 says the committee set up by the National Institute of Health. Currently, less than half of the hearing impaired cases on infants are seen as there is a mandatory screening only for babies who have a higher risk of getting it. The chairman of the committee and a professor at Loyola University in Chicago stated that children with hearing problems must undergo special test for hearing impairments before they are three to avoid creating permanent damage to their language and speech skills.
Along with this the professor also stated that two and one half years is the current age range that a child should be tested for hearing impairments though they do intend to lower the current age to about 6 months. With the new instruments that are surfacing today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is now possible to detect hearing deficiencies on new born. Relatively a new instrument that will sense for otoacoustic emissions in the baby just right after being born is now possible and is greatly advocated.
A device will transmit clicking sounds to the inner ear where it will detect an echo like response and this is what the test involves. The response is evaluated by a computer to determine if the inner ear is functioning normally. In order to really verify the presence of hearing deficiencies a secondary test will be done which will now use the system named auditory brainstem responses. The secondary test will need for a contraption to be affixed on the infant's head and then there will be a clicking sound made. When the sound is heard naturally, then the sensors will show a certain brain wave form.
Sound responses will be measured in the two tests. Parents will have to spend about $25 for the otoacoustic emission and the second one which is more complicated will cost about $75 to $125. If all US new born were screened after birth, it would cost the nation $150 million to $200 million,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it could save the country billions of dollars by increasing the earning power of those who get early treatment.
Some experts estimate that a child will lose about $400, 000 to $800, 000 in lifetime earnings when their hearing problems are not looked into by the time they are three years old since at this point there are irreversible damage to their speech. Based on research,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chances are when there is late detection of hearing loss on children they well graduate high school with reading skills of a fourth to seventh grader. Once hearing loss is seen earlier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the life of the child will be different since now they will have greater chances of going to a normal school and not one that specializes in deaf teachings. Therefore a country will be able to save on expenses with early detection.
