The Changing Face of Web TV
For most of the 20th century, television has been an integral part of our daily lives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with many people living by routines, which are centred around their favourite shows.
For example, many tune in at a certain time each day to watch their favourite soap. Others watch the 10 O’ Clock news without fail. These viewing habits are determined by tradition and the fact that for many years, viewers had little option but to watch programming at the allotted time.
As times have changed, however, so too have viewing patterns. Increasingly, audiences are seeking ‘ on demand’ services, which allow them to view content at a time which is convenient to them. Over time, advancements in technology have meant that viewers are able to fit TV viewing in around their lives, rather than the other way round.
Web TV specialists Streaming Tank take a look at some of these technologies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and how they have impacted on TV viewing habits.
The 1980’ s – VHS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cable and satellite
In the 1980s, the introduction of the VHS video tape format had a massive effect on people’ s viewing habits. For the first time, audiences had the ability to record programmes and then watch them later, at a time that was convenient to them. This principle has become increasingly popular and was the catalyst for a host of changes which were to follow
The 80’ s also saw the mainstream introduction of cable and satellite television services. This opened up new opportunities to both viewers and broadcasters. These formats provided enhanced picture quality when compared to terrestrial TV,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and also gave broadcasters the opportunity to watch a broader range of programming.
The 1990’ s – TV goes digital
In 1998, BSkyB launched its digital service. This gave viewers a far superior picture quality to analogue systems and for the first time opened up opportunities for viewer interactivity.
Sky’ s digibox can be connected to a phone line, enabling users to access the internet and services such as shopping, games and video on-demand. The Box’ s EPG (electronic programme guide) allows users to see a schedule of programming for each channel and can be programmed to issue reminders when a selected show is about to start.
1998 also saw the launch of ITV’ s attempt to challenge Sky’ s dominance of the pay TV market. The ill-fated On-Digital service (later rebranded ITV Digital) in 1998 was largely a failure and the service ceased broadcasting in 2002.
The 21st Century – Freeview and Digital recorders
Launched in 2001, the Sky Plus service was launched. Incorporating a hard drive within the set-top box, this meant that viewers could pause live television and return to it later.
2002 saw the launch of Freeview, allowing viewers access to free-to-air digital channels. Despite poor coverage in some areas, this has largely been a success, with most of the analogue systems it replaces being switched off by 2010.
The Future - Web TV
The availability and quality of broadband internet connections now means that web TV is now a serious contender to mainstream television.
As web TV and webcasting have become increasingly popular among audiences, many broadcasters have embraced this shift in viewing habits by offering live video streaming content over the internet. In the U. K there are several providers of web TV over ADSL. These include Tiscali and BT Vision service.
More and more people are turning to on-demand services which allow them to choose what they want to watch, and most importantly, when they want to watch it. For this reason, web TV has a huge future on the way we consume programming content.
