British Columbia smugglers are getting caught in the U.S. and are facing harsh sentences for distributing benzylpiperazine. In March 2010, Krysta Edwards, 23, got a five-year sentence in Washington after she pleaded guilty to smuggling hundreds of thousands of BZP pills across the border.

As with most sympathomimetic stimulants there are a significant amount of side effects associated with BZP use. Benzylpiperazine reportedly produces insomnia and a mild to severe hangover after the drug effect wears off.
There was a British case where a woman took BZP and died. A New Zealand report states that 61 people who took BZP were hospitalized over five months. Sgt. Peter Sadler, of the Vancouver police drug squad said to the Vancouver Sun, “Can it kill? Yes it can. A tow truck driver from Vancouver was sentenced in April 2010 to eight years after being caught in California with over 225 pounds of BZP, ecstasy and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. Daniel Lane, assistant special agent in charge for the ICE Office of Investigations in Sacramento said in an interview with the Vancouver Sun, "This sentence serves as a stern warning about the consequences awaiting those who smuggle dangerous drugs."
Goddard also stated that the same crime groups that manufacture other chemical drugs are making BZP in the same labs in unhygienic conditions.
In April 2010, the Vancouver Sun reported about a new party drug entering the war of drugs arena. BZP is similar to ecstasy and is increasingly being produced in British Columbia. Although no laws are currently in place in Canada and some other countries, the U.S. has BZP as a Schedule 1 drug meaning it is illegal to manufacture, buy, possess or distribute without a DEA license.
In a Vancouver Sun news story, RCMP Staff Sgt. Dave Goddard, of the Greater Vancouver drug section, said gangs in British Columbia may be deliberately producing BZP to sidestep Canada’s drug laws.

Health Canada is in the process of adding BZP to the list of controlled substances.
The major side effects include: blurred vision, dry mouth, extreme alertness [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], confusion, agitation, headaches, dizziness, anxiety [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], insomnia, hyperventilation as well as problems with urine retention. More serious effects include: psychosis or adverse psychiatric events, renal toxicity, seizures and respiratory failure.
BZP is sold as ecstasy to unknowing buyers sometimes and if caught, sellers could face charges. “Where they are misrepresenting it as another drug, then we do prosecute,” Goddard said. “If we were to find it in somebody’s pocket and had it analyzed, we wouldn’t be able to lay a charge.”
