|
|
Tucked away quietly on St. Marc (just north of Ste. Catherine), this modest restaurant serves up tons of flavor which is anything but quiet. A must for those in the area. And for those outside downtown, it is worth the short commute.
For ardent carnivores [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the non-veg should be preferable. But for those wanting to experiment a bit, go for the non-veg. For many people, their experience with Indian food might not extend much past samosas, butter chicken and Naan bread. But Thali gives diners the opportunity to discover such vegetarian gems such as palak paneer, a tasty marriage of cheese and spinach. Or chana masala, well-cooked chick peas infused with curry flavor. When one thinks Indian food, cauliflower may not come directly to mind but the aloo goobi at Thali is great. It is perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. It’s not a bad idea to top off the meal with one of their samosas, some of the best in the city. Of course, each dish comes covered in its own sauce, perfect for Naan bread dipping.

Some Favorites at Thali in Montreal
The Indian restaurant Thali [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], located in the heart of downtown Montreal, is a truly special experience. The modestly-sized restaurant is run by a group of Indians who create fresh, authentic and flavourful Indian cuisine at highly affordable prices. For both financial and practical reasons, the place is always packed. Financial because a hearty meal for two shouldn't exceed 20 dollars. And practical because it is a short jaunt from both the McGill and Concordia campuses in downtown Montreal.

Thali Cuisine Indienne
Thali is the Indian word for the traditional metal platter used in India. Not coincidentally [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all the food here is served in this way. Resembling what one would expect prison plates to look like, the food is served on compartmentalized metal platters. And much like prison, customers wait patiently in line to order their food and then shimmy over a few feet to select what they want. There are no servers.

It seems like their signature dish is vegetable or non-vegetable Thali. With both dishes, customers get a choice of three foods which get served with rice and a green salad. This gives diners the chance to taste a few different dishes in one sitting, a version of Indian tapas. And to top it off, the entire meal gets temporarily hidden with a generous serving of Naan bread.
