Barriers to care
African American people have a legacy of holding secrets, feeling shame about being vulnerable and avoiding emotions as a defense mechanism. Black men and children have Black women to support them when dealing with oppression. Institutions in the Black community like the church rely on Black women’s labor to function. Black women also are drawn to fields where they serve other people all day. Most Black women have no where to turn to get support, and no time or energy to tend to their own needs.
Clinical depression is a depressed mood and an inability to enjoy life’s activities – which lasts over a long period of time (more than two weeks) – along with one or more of the following symptoms:
Anyone can experience depression from time to time due to the loss of a loved one, disappointments, stress, job loss or a breakup. Prolonged depression, loss of ability to function and the loss of interest in daily activities are signs of a bigger problem.
Once diagnosed, depression can be treated. There are many triggers for depression which may be biological or genetic or may stem from life events, health problems or medications. Treatment can include medication, therapy or a combination of the two – depending on what is causing the depression.

Women, Depression, Stress and Anxiety
Black women are highly functional, and often are able to mask the symptoms of depression. For Black women, weight gain (which is interconnected with using food for comfort and protection) is often a sign of depression. Alcohol, drug abuse and smoking are also used to mask depression. Also, “acting out” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hyper-irritability and negativity may be signs that a woman is depressed.
What you can do
Statistics on depression are uncertain, because there is little clinical research on Black women. There needs to be more culturally competent researchers who can reach out to these populations in effective ways. Additional information can help mental health practitioners understand the ways that racism [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sexism, and most often class exploitation intersect to cause chronic stress and depression in the lives of Black women.
Signs of depression and treatment
For Black women depression is often misdiagnosed. Black women with depressive symptoms are often told to lose weight or to learn to relax. Black women also suffer from “Superwoman Syndrome” which makes them feel like depression is a sign of weakness, so they may not seek the help they need. Without access to affordable and quality health care, finding mental health assistance may seem impossible.
Black women are at high risk for depression. Black women often manage multiple roles in the family, community and at work. They are socialized to take care of others at the expense of their own needs. The triple threat of racism, sexism and class exploitation takes a toll on Black women’s health, and is found to be linked to many health issues including depression.
