Learning Spanish Grammar the Fast Way
We've all been there: four years of Spanish in high school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], another two in college,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and nothing to show for it. I personally know several people who've had the above frustrating experience with Spanish language classes, and I've had my share of Spanish class disappointment as well. Have you ever met anybody who learned to speak a language fluently in class? I haven't. At best, they can read, write, and understand a bare minimum of spoken communication, but they certainly can't speak the language themselves. It's The Method, Stupid If you feel like you've been studying Spanish for years in school and are frustrated with your limited progress, don't fret. It's not you, it's the method. Spanish class is simply an inefficient way to learn the language and that's all there is to it. So if expensive classes aren't the answer, what is? Simple: concentrated drilling focusing on what you really need to know to speak and understand Spanish in the real world. Sure, it's nice to know all those abstract grammatical facts but it's entirely unnecessary to learn to speak the language. I'd estimate that probably 80% of everything you'll learn in class is wasted effort. No wonder your progress is so slow! Since you'll be studying on your own, it's imperative you study efficiently. Fortunately, there are now plenty of high-quality self-learning products on the market that can take you from absolute novice to near-fluent, including the venerable FSI series, Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone, and a few others. Many of these programs may seem expensive at first glance, but when you tally the cost of tuition, books,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the private tutoring required to get ahead in Spanish class, they turn out to be true bargains. The more frugal among you will be tempted to skip the expensive learning programs and go it alone. While it is certainly possible to learn Spanish on a budget (less than $50,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even), you pay the price for your frugality by prolonging the time until you reach fluency. This is probably fine for many learners, but if there's one thing I've learned, everybody is out for instant gratification. The slower your progress, the more likely you are to give up on your goals, and then all your efforts are wasted! It is important to weight the monetary cost involved against the time commitment required to get a true picture of the cost of learning Spanish.
